Reader comment on item: Bibliography – My Writings on Burqas, Niqabs, Jilbabs, Chadors, Hijabs, and other Islamic Coverings

Submitted by Noach Stern (Australia), Aug 2, 2007 at 00:23

It's time for me to express my thanks and admiration for the calm, reasoned and clearly-expressed writing - and speaking - that I've found in your publications and recorded appearances.

One phrase in particular caught my attention and reminded me of all the difficulties I've had in arguing with self-styled moderates and peace-loving anti-war protesters - in the style of our Australian national brodcaster for example - which is often belied by the immoderate and belligerent bias to their behaviour and its consequences.

Your phrase is that "good sense calls for modesty itself to be modest."

In circulating the link to others I added the following comment:

Pipes' usual well-argued and well-researched material contains a memorable phrase: "good sense calls for modesty itself to be modest."

It is as well for all us moderates - for who would describe themselves as anything else? - to remember to be moderate too in our moderation. In other words, there are situations in which moderation is not an appropriate (or life-preserving) response.
