You make some valid points except when you stated, "The Soviets allied with the West to defeat Hitler. After the war we became their target." No, they became out targets. Remember the communist revolution took place in 1917 and since then there was a neurotic fear of socialism/communism in the US and in a way it continues today. After the Nazi surrender in 1945 there were a few military commanders who wanted to take on the soviets----and thus began the cold war.
