Apparently there has always been a very strong undercurrent of resistance in Iran, despite the Mullah's attempts to stifle it. And, because they persist on their own, and even in the face of foolish attempts to accommodate the dictators as if they actually speak for the people, they endure. If that resistance is unified, or embodied in various mutually antagonistic factions as in other M.E. countries, I don't know - though that would be an important factor in deciding whether to help and whom.
That resistance makes Iran appear to me the most likely of all the countries in the M.E. to be ripe for democracy. In fact, I've wondered for years now why we haven't been more aggressive in supporting it. Yet, despite the hope they seem to represent, the diplomats babble on about "engaging" Iran, which only means empowering the despots! It's bad enough we don't want to assist the forces of freedom, but to undermine them by giving aid and comfort to their enemies and ours? That's just plain dumb. Unfortunately, that is par for the course, isn't it?
The only thing that puts me off is the term "Mujahedeen." Call me old fashioned, but any group with any form of the term "jihad" in it doesn't inspire me to rush to endorse it. Of course, maybe they selected that moniker to get the attention of the State Department? Now THAT would be a proper use of Taqqiyah.
