To win we must be prepared to sink below their level.

Reader comment on item: [Lee Harris on Why the U.S. is] Discarding War's Rules

Submitted by GRAHAM RAEL-BROOK (United States), Jul 23, 2003 at 11:33

Mr. Harris has put his finger on the necessity for a changed set of rules or no rules at all in combating Terrorism. To do otherwise is to shield our enemy who is counting on our overvaluing World Opinion. But what value will world approval have if we fall victim to defeat by Organized Terrorism growing in strength derived from and feeding on its continued 'success'?

We should not forget that victory over the Japanese military that resorted to the use of kamikaze tactics was finally achieved at the terrible price of killing countless thousands of innocent civilians. In so doing we sank below the level of our enemy but we prevailed, whereas in cases of defeats, we have not been willing to exert all the weaponry at our disposal.

Most of our brave defenders are uniformed and so present easy targets for our enemies who mass murder indiscriminately and need no camouflage to be undiscernable from respectable citizens among whom they operate.
