Ideologues and Higher EducationReader comment on item: Extremists on Campus Submitted by Brian O'Connor (United States), Jun 26, 2002 at 10:14 Higher education is too important to be left to ideologues. To do so is court exactly the kind of outrages that Mr. Pipes cites in his article. And yet, most of our institutions of higher education have become less places where open debate occurs, and more places where the spoken and written word must pass muster with politically correct group-think that romanticizes some groups and demonizes others. In short, "diversity" is measured in terms of skin color and sexual preference rather than in terms of different ideas. For a chilling introduction on how repressive group-think is, visit the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) at http://www.thefire.org And don't ever forget what Alan Kors and Harvey Silverglate say in their book "The Shadow University" -- "Sunlight is the best disinfectant."
