Dr. Daniel Pipes is an extraordinary scholar and a brilliant analyst on the issues of Israel and the Middle-East.
Giving us a name, Christian Zionists, is empowering. It gives us a voice and a tie to Israel that has, unfortunately, eluded many Christians.
Zionism comes out of our Christian and American heritage. America is a Judaic-Christian country. We are more than a nation of the Enlightenment. John Adams believed that the Constitution should have been written in Hebrew and Michaelangelo did his greatest work in making the word of the Old Testament come to life in sculpture and painting. The Bill of Rights is our Ten Commandments and the Constitution is almost Talmudic. The Puritains viewed their passage to America as a religious experience. They saw themselves as the Israelites passing over to the promised land. In addition, Israel, as a liberal democratic democracy whose fate in a region defined by theocracy, oppression and corruption, will define our future in the world. What happens to Israel will happen to us. September 11th was the defining
moment when America became Israel.
The fate of Israel and its people is as important to us as is the fate of our own country. Ariel Sharon said it to President Bush, "We are family."
