Thank you so much for responding to me. It seems that there is confusion everywhere. The US, for instance, seems to be in a reactive mood and does not have a coherent long-term plan to deal with the threat of Islam. Maybe I should say that American, European and Israeli political leaders are acting that way. They look no further than the next election.

As you say very accurately "We got that deer-in-the-headlights look". Bush and Rice want to create an independent Palestine, but I don't think they could come up with a good reason based on solid evidence to back it up. The experience in Iraq has taught them nothing about trying to legislate democracy in the ME.

Maybe the US government, along with other leaders, are responding to the overwhelming PR job of anti-Israel organizations, the media, and plain old anti-Semitism.

In any case, the ones to pay the price for the confusion, incompetence and lack of vision of Western leaders, including Israeli leaders, are the Israeli people.

Your last comment reflects the sadness we feel at the state of the world these days:

"Does Israel have the will to survive? Good question. Do we?"

This could be the subject of a brand new essay by Mr Pipes, who has often touched on this subject in the past. Where do we stand now, several years after 9-11? Maybe getting complacent again, or just plain resigned.
